Mandelson Arrested Over Misconduct Allegations

Former Labour peer Peter Mandelson was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office and later released on bail, according to statements from his legal representatives. The development marks a significant escalation in an investigation linked to historical allegations about his time in government.

Lawyers Say Arrest Based on False Flight Risk Claim

Mandelson’s lawyers at Mishcon de Reya said the arrest was triggered by what they described as an unfounded claim that he intended to leave the United Kingdom permanently. They stressed there was no factual basis for any suggestion he planned to relocate abroad.

The firm stated that Mandelson had already agreed with the police to attend a voluntary interview scheduled for the following month. Despite this arrangement, officers proceeded with the arrest, which his legal team says was unnecessary and unjustified.

Epstein Files Allegations Behind Investigation

The investigation follows renewed scrutiny after the U.S. Justice Department released documents related to Jeffrey Epstein. Allegations have circulated that Mandelson may have passed confidential government information to the disgraced financier while serving as business secretary in the administration of former prime minister Gordon Brown.

Mandelson has consistently rejected any suggestion of wrongdoing and maintains he acted lawfully during his time in office.

Legal Team Seeks Evidence From Police

In its statement, Mishcon de Reya said it has requested details from the Metropolitan Police regarding the evidence used to justify the arrest. The lawyers emphasised that Mandelson’s primary focus remains full cooperation with investigators and clearing his reputation.

Police Decline Public Comment

The Metropolitan Police has not issued any public statement on the arrest or the ongoing inquiry. Mandelson remains on bail while the investigation continues.
