China Grants Visa-Free Entry to UK and Canadian Tourists for Spring Festival 2026
China has introduced a major travel concession for selected foreign nations ahead of the Spring Festival 2026 celebrations. The new measure allows citizens of the United Kingdom and Canada to enter mainland China without a visa for short stays.
30-Day Visa-Free Stay From February 2026
From 17 February 2026, holders of ordinary British and Canadian passports can visit China for up to 30 days without applying for a visa in advance. The policy covers travel for tourism, business, family visits, exchanges, and transit purposes.
Policy Valid Until End of 2026
China’s foreign ministry stated that the visa-free arrangement will initially remain in force until 31 December 2026. Officials said the change aims to strengthen people-to-people connections and encourage greater international travel and cooperation.
Diplomatic Visits Paved the Way
The agreement follows separate visits to Beijing in January by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Both leaders met Chinese President Xi Jinping and welcomed progress on easing travel rules between the countries.
Part of China’s Broader Travel Opening
With this step, UK and Canadian travelers join passport holders from about 50 other countries, including major European and Asia-Pacific economies, who already enjoy visa-free access to China for short stays.
Economic and Business Motivations
British officials believe the policy will help companies expand commercial activity in China and improve trade ties. During his visit, Starmer noted that many UK firms want stronger access to Chinese markets and partnerships.
Criticism and Security Concerns
Despite the economic benefits, the UK government’s efforts to deepen relations with Beijing have drawn criticism from some political figures. Concerns focus on human rights issues and national security risks linked to closer engagement with China.
Travel Demand Expected to Rise
The rule change could affect hundreds of thousands of travelers. Official UK data shows that more than 600,000 British citizens visited China in 2024, suggesting significant potential uptake of visa-free trips once the policy begins.
